Zheng Yanying
Zheng Yanying, born on June 26, 1953, is from Liquan County, Shaanxi Province. He graduated from the Chinese Department of Wuhan University and is a first-class writer. He is currently a vice president of the China Writers Association Prose Society. He has published nine novels, including From Breathing to Groaning and Horsetail Whisk, 12 works collections including Sun, South of the River, Zheng Yanying’s Poetry and Ink Paintings - Country Models, and three screenplays including Qinchuan Love, six TV series including Stone Falls and General Peng Xuefeng; more than 30 of his books have won awards including the national “Five Ones” project award, the National Social Sciences Humanities Outstanding Achievements Award and other awards. In 1985, the film Qinchuan Love, adapted from the novel Sun, represented China for the first time at the West Berlin International Film Festival. In 2008, in the online novel exhibition of the 30th Provincial Association of Chinese Writers, Zheng Yanying’s novel From Breathing to Groaning, won the most popular novel award and the best novel award. There was an online debate over this novel and internet sensation Han Han, which became a national central issue overnight; in 2010, the essay collection Wind on the Water won the Lu Xun Literature Prize.
Zheng Yanying’s creative philosophy is to use his own pen to truthfully describe feelings towards life, the times, and human beings. He lets his works enter the soul of the people, and moisturize the soul. His style is a rebellion against artificiality. It is grounded, solid text that completely does away with the boring pretense, and its charm lies entirely in the gifts that come directly from life. The rich living atmosphere and cultural content in his prose have been highly praised by the famous writer Chen Jiangong.
The essay collection South of the River is about the culture of the Central Plains, written with the visual and vivid language of the novelist. Zheng Yanying has been living in the Central Plains for a long time. Based on his investigation and experience, his modern vision and a sorrowful mind, he connects the ancient to the modern, revives history and paints pictures of mountains and rivers, and shows the characteristics of the appearance and spirit of Henan. The novel Washed Heart Bird tells the story of a factory director named Lin Yijing. He takes his section chiefs He Tongyou, Fang Famin, female secretary Yu Qing and driver Chen Daji on a weekend fishing trip. A supernatural force brings them to an unknown area far away from the mortal realm, where they encounter various difficulties and obstacles to survival. The novel not only reveals the true colors of the deified “supreme chiefs” and “masters”, but also has some kind of inspired awakening for those who enter the misunderstanding of faith. The people, matters, and things in the essay collection Wind on the Water are presented to the people in the most authentic and original form. A carefree childhood, an air force military career, and rich life experience have become the foundations of Zheng Yanying’s creations. He summed up the normal life in rural areas in long essays, with extremely simple and ingenious pictures, reflecting the changes of social history and its great impact on the countryside. Whether it is those wonderful bits and pieces or the complexity and contradictions of life, all reflect the true and subtle and specific feelings of Zheng Yanying on the countryside.
Zheng Yanying’s recent work, The Dragon Travels Asia and Europe, was written over the course of two years and after travelling tens of thousands of kilometers throughout Asia and Europe. It merges the feelings of the countries and their eternal worries, and interprets the past and present and future prospects of China and Europe. It is a long-form documentary writing work that expresses everything about China and Europe.
